November Check Your Boobies- CanCan Responds to ACS’s New Screening Guidelines

To mammogram or not to mammogram? Experts can’t agree

by:

Hang on, now. Before I get into a hospital gown and jam my naked girls into the medical equivalent of a panini maker, let me get a few things straight.

Every other year with the mammogram? You sure? Because the last time I heard from you folks at the American Cancer Society (ACS), I was advised to go annually, starting at age 40 — not 45, which is what was recommended the other day.

And then there’s the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which just said that most women don’t need to start having the screening until the age of 50.

Adding to the confusion, The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which said women need to start lining up for the old stand-and-squish starting at age 40.

Three organizations, three different recommendations. And our health — literally — in their hands.

Having breasts in America is a little like having two teenagers who will only communicate with you via text. You want everyone to be safe and healthy. But you can’t get a complete or straight answer from anyone. And the answers you do get change all the time.

“Oh, God. Everybody’s going crazy here,” said Anna Gottlieb, the executive director of Gilda’s Club, a nonprofit that supports cancer patients and their families. They track cancer-prevention advisories daily, and even they’re confused.

“It’s like drinking red wine,” Gottlieb said. “Are you supposed to, or not supposed to? And if so, how much?”

She introduced me to Heike Malakoff, the founder of a nonprofit called CanCan, which educates women about breast health.

CanCan (previously known as “Check Your Boobies”) does some 200 educational workshops a year at college campuses, low-income housing developments, homeless shelters and even private parties.

“The ACS said physicians shouldn’t do breast exams at the OB/GYN,” she said. “It’s crazy. It’s just noise. I could not disagree with it more.”

Not only are the mixed messages from the medical community confusing, they’re dangerous in that they give women a false sense of safety.

Malakoff herself was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34 — well before any of the recommended ages for starting mammograms.

She found the lump herself, while breast-feeding her twin sons. (She had noticed a smaller lump 18 months before, while nursing her daughter, but it was benign.) Under the new guidelines, she wouldn’t have even gone in.

One CanCan colleague — also younger than the age guidelines — only had a screening because her employer, Microsoft, had a mammography van visit the Redmond campus. The exam found ductal carcinoma in several locations, and the woman had it removed.

“She wouldn’t have found that if not for the van coming to her work,” Malakoff said.

Last week, a board member called Malakoff to talk about the new recommendations: “Oh, I just turned 40,” she said. “I don’t have to worry about a mammogram for five years.”

Malakoff grimaced: “That’s the problem.”

So what’s the take-away from the recent recommendations?

“There is no take-away,” Malakoff said. “It’s B.S.”

No, really. Anything I can do to cut down time spent in a flimsy hospital gown, a breezy hall and a breast press is welcome.

It’s pretty simple, Malakoff said: Know your body.

“If I hadn’t been touching them and knowing my breasts, I wouldn’t have gone in,” she said of her diagnosis. “But it felt different.”

Ninety percent of her CanCan facilitators discovered their cancer on their own, she said, or at mammograms they had at 40.

So instead of getting confused, women need to be proactive. Know your family history. Talk to your doctor. Have genetic testing, if you think you might be at risk.

And if you want a mammogram, get one — no matter what the experts say.

October Check Your Boobies Reminder

This Breast Cancer Awareness month, we urge you to do two things. 1)Check Your Boobies this month and every month so you know your normal and 2)Think before you pink.

We still have NO CURE for breast cancer, the best we can do is early detection, so that women have the most option and hopefully the best outcomes. That is why CanCan is here. CanCan is all about putting people into action about their health, giving them tools for early detection, prevention and self-advocacy. We give healthy women (and some men!), from all walks of life, a fun way to learn what they can do to feel more in control and less in fear about cancer. We also give cancer survivors a place to share the stories that can save lives.

And THINK BEFORE YOU PINK. We encourage you to read this article as a kickoff to breast cancer awareness month. We could not have said it better. Thank you Brandi Sellers for your insightful post on this important topic. http://graceless.me/not-for-sale-a-case-against-pinktober/.

As you know, we at CanCan are here for you this month and every other month of the year.

xoxo

You CanCan Team

CanCan Name Change Q&A

CanCan Name Change Q&A

What?! You’re changing your name! Why? & What’s the strategy behind changing the name?

We love the fun and youthfulness that our name conveys; we picked it because it’s memorable, gets people talking and taking action. We’re growing and are passionate about educating and empowering more audiences in diverse communities on what they can do to be proactive about their health. Having a more general organizational name will help us reach a more people.

This name change is part of a larger strategic planning process, expaning our services to educate and empower more people. As a result of that process, we are working on new partnerships and grant opportunities. We are currently expanding our education to workplace programs. As we reach new audiences, with new cancers and health concerns with our unique blend of fun, fearlessness and empowerment, it became obvious we needed a new name that was more inclusive.

What will happen to the name Check Your Boobies?

We’re happy to tell you the name lives on! We’re keeping it as the name of our campus breast health program, Our campus ambassadors and the students that we’re educating love the name Check Your Boobies as it always get’s people attention. It’s the perfect name for that audience. We currently have campus ambassadors on 5 of the Pac-12 campuses and these ambassadors are not slowing down! They will continue on as Check Your Boobies Ambassadors, responsible for bringing Check Your Boobies Parties to all of their respective campuses. Already in 2015 alone, our ambassadors have educated 2,500 students at 50 Check Your Boobies parties! We are excited to continue the strong tradition of Check Your Boobies as a program under CanCan.

So, why did you pick CanCan?

Cancan has some of the same sense of fun and joy that Check Your Boobies has, without the limits that come with a name with “boobies” in it. It also has some fun secondary meanings baked in, such as “canning cancer” and “yes we can can.”

Tell us about the new logo.

The new logo takes elements from our old one (you can still see breasts, if you’re looking for them!), including color and font, but brings it more in alignment with the feeling of fun and empowerment we were going for with the CanCan name. We think it’s bold and beautiful, just like CanCan is!

So what’s next?

A lot is going on! You’ve probably seen our fun new website (checkyourboobies.org, until it becomes cancanhealth.org), and we’re growing with new partnerships, a new office (we’re sharing space with Gilda’s Club!) and developing new workplace programs. It’s all good.

It all sounds great. How can I help?

Tell people about CanCan. As with any name change, it will take a while for people to learn our new name, so we are asking our friends and supporters to tell people: “Check Your Boobies is now CanCan. More inclusive. Still fun. Always empowering.

Donate time and/or money. A great opportunity for that is our annual fundraising gala, coming on September 26, 2015. Plan to attend, become a table captain and/or a sponsor.

CANCAN NEWS RELEASE

CANCAN NEWS RELEASE

June 1, 2015

CHECK YOUR BOOBIES, A BREAST HEALTH NONPROFIT, EXPANDS TO OTHER CANCER EDUCATION PROGRAMS, CHANGES NAME TO “CANCAN”
– Check Your Boobies will continue to be the name of the educational programs for breast cancer –

SEATTLE, June 1, 2015 –Check Your Boobies, a breast health education nonprofit, announced today that it has changed its name to CanCan, effective today. The move to CanCan reflects the organization’s widening focus on additional cancers and diseases, as well as the organization’s focus on empowering people into action about their health, giving them tools for early detection, prevention and self-advocacy.

Founded in 2004 by Mercer Island mom and cancer survivor Heike Malakoff, Check Your Boobies (CYB) has been conducting fun, empowering education sessions about breast health on college campuses, at churches, and in community groups and workplaces. The CanCan brand opens up new areas of growth for education and new areas of funding.”

Unlike fear-based or awareness-only cancer programs, CanCan will retain the fun, fearless approach to education and empowerment that CYB fostered.

“CanCan represents empowerment and a commitment to put an end to cancer.  We can ‘can’ cancer.  And with this new platform, we’re planning to expand our reach to a wider audience with the ultimate goal of preventing and detecting more cancers earlier,” said Ms. Malakoff.  “This new chapter is a celebration of 11 years of success with Check Your Boobies – we now have a great springboard from which to launch new programming on new topics to new groups of people.”

CanCan will be expanding into more  workplace programs and – to support this growth — is looking for support from additional partners.

“We’re at colleges and universities up and down the West Coast, and the feedback about our name and its usefulness in getting people to come to our events is universally positive,” said Kayla Driscoll, CYB’s program manager.  “With the continued support of our campus ambassadors, we are thrilled to continue the strong tradition of Check Your Boobies as the campus program under CanCan.

About CanCan

Think Before Your Pink: October 2014

Before the Media Mania of Pink October Breast Cancer Awareness Month starts a few things CYB would like you to remember!

1. There is no ONE thing that will cure or prevent breast cancer, it is a complicated disease and everyone of us is different.

2. There is no ONE thing that causes breast cancer. In fact the truth is we DON’T KNOW what causes breast cancer – we have lots of theories and know about lots of things that MAY point to the answer but reality is WE DON’T KNOW.

3. There is no miracle pill, vegetable, fruit, meat, bean, grain, exercise, breathing technique or ‘way’ to prevent it.

4. IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!

So what do we do when confronted with all the news and information we get hit with, what do we believe, what do we keep and what do we toss.

If they discover that eating chocolate reduces your risk for breast cancer (my personal dream come true!) then acknowledge that is a great discovery and don’t feel guilty when you eat some chocolate IN MODERATION!!!!

If something is showing promise as a risk reduction or preventative step than find a way to incorporate some of it into your lifestyle – do not forsake all others to replace it with the new found miracle. Chances are in a few years we will learn that it has a bad side to it also.

Just because it increases or decreases your risk for breast cancer does not mean that it is all bad or all good. Birth control pills may increase your risk for breast cancer BUT they also can DECREASE your risk for ovarian cancer.

Question everything!!!!!!!!!!! And take what you hear and see with an acknowledgement that because of all this awareness we now have people working on trying to find answers and find a cure or a preventative answer to this horrible disease.

In the meantime:

Eat lots of vegetables! The more the better.

Get exercise of some kind every day – just move – get up and stretch, walk around your chair, do anything do something! Get that lymphatic system moving!

Moderation and Variety – enjoy life and mix it up a bit!

Everything else is debatable and will be debated for months and years to come. Make the best and healthiest decision you can for you and your family at the time you are making it and then move on.

Here’s to a future without breast cancer – or any cancer for that matter! Until then STAY SMART – STAY INFORMED AND

LIVE EACH DAY TO THE FULLEST!

July Check Your Boobies

One in eight women will get breast cancer in their lives. This means all women need to be equipped with the information and knowledge necessary to protect their health. CYB is all about giving healthy woman the education and tools for early detection of breast cancer for the best outcomes.

Who cares about your health more than you do? No one. This means we must all be self-advocates, making sure we take control over our health. Doctors can downplay risk, miss symptoms, or under-order tests; when a woman takes charge of her health, she can get the care she needs.

Self-advocacy around breast health can take several forms: through knowing your breasts and genetics, doing breast self-exams, getting recommended mammograms, and knowing what to ask your doctor. And getting into action about your health reduces fear!

Take action today and CHECK YOUR BOOBIES!

I saw my fragile life flash before me, and truly thought it was the end. Little did I know, it was just another journey in life–a new beginning. Click here to read Debra’s story.
